I was aged eight when I first entered a barber shop on my own.
And asked for a job, mr Owens who had the barber shop on aber square at the time gave me a Saturday job, That was 48 years ago.
ive had a few jobs since then, I've been a boxer, pipe fitter, taxi driver'and for the past 30 years proprietor of The chopping block barbers the only original, traditional certified professional gents barber in Caerphilly town centre. (None of this fast track, learn how to do a fade in one or two weeks on YouTube here) time served I'm proud to say.
I started the chopping block when I was a taxi driver, I had a fold away chair, clippers, comb, scissors, mirror, and a home made sign that said, barber here today,in the boot of my cab. i would pull up in the car park out side the taxi office, pull out my sign set up shop in the waiting area of the taxi office and charge £2.00 a haircut. Before no time I had built up a respectful client base.Time to move on and expand.
I went out and spent £35.00 on a caravan, the idea to become a traveling barber.
i gutted the trailer modified and strengthened the walls, put in a barber chair, a mirror and painted it in red and white stripes, now for a name.
the trailer looked like a red and white block, I chopped hair inside it, eat in it, slept in it, and worked in it.
THE CHOPPING BLOCK !!!!!!
was born.
i traveled around for the past four years parking up in pub car parks, in them days most pubs had a bookies near by, where there were betting shops there were sure to be gentlemen who needed their hair cut.
on Fridays I would always find an asda store car park set up shop at 7.30am and stay as late as the sun would allow me. in them days blokes got payed on weekends.
with a pocket full of wages, there was only one place the wife is going, and you was going with her, not to shop, but to be chief trolley pusher and cash dispenser at the checkout.
